The first characteristic is that identity exists at the individual and societal level. It also affects the way we think politically. At the individual level we are usually concerned over the differences we have with other individuals, and at the collective level, it is the differences in the group that creates a distinct impression of what makes our group unique. Another important key factor in identity is the relationships and experiences people have that allow them to grow. Social identity can change dynamically from certain interactions with people. An example of this would be the dissatisfaction that feminists feel about their social status which prompted them to create a social movement. What is your identity and how would you describe it? Don't forget that our intrapersonal social identity also evolves and morphs as a function of our age and/or status. So the same person can start with one social identity based on his/her perceptual reality and end up with another, as he/she progresses in life's cultural and social evolutionary cycle.
