Explain how your literary canon has changed and describe what your selections infer about your cultural identity.
I don't need the answer to this question because it is my homework but, I would like someone to explain to me how to do this. I need some direction on how to start this. Please someone explain this to me.
Write a 300-700 words in which you list the literary works in your current personal literary canon.?
%26quot;canon%26quot;: an official list or catalogue, therefore the books you consider to be important or meaningful to you personally beyond just having been assigned.
%26quot;Inferrence of cultural identity in preferred reading materials%26quot;: the tendency of books preferred by you to suggest things about your cultural (racial, ethnic, gender, sexuality or national country of origin) identity. (i.e. %26quot;Under the Tuscan Sun%26quot; chosen by an Italian immigrant from Arezzo, %26quot;The Millagro Beanfield War%26quot; chosen by the child of migrant workers, etc)
%26quot;thesis%26quot;: the written development of an argument or organized statement of thought based on 1. Thesis statement (your words to state the assignment). 2. Body (where you develope your answer to 1. 3. Summation (where you briefly restate 1 and 2 in a few words with any closing afterthoughts you may (or may not) have.
Begin with a statement and brief discussion of books you liked five or ten years ago (obviously how far back you choose to go is age dependent!) and how they differ from the books that speak to you now. Just put down all the thoughts you have on this. Don't worry about thinking in order, or trying to compose your essay as you write it...just put stuff down (see below)
Then ask and answer the question of %26quot;cultural inferrence.%26quot;
You may or may not agree that the books you select suggest anything about your cultural identity. They may only appeal to you on emotional or intellectual levels. Your task then is to discuss why you agree with the premise or why you disagree with the premise and support your judgement.
Sum up your thesis by briefly restating in a slightly different way the way your taste has evolved and how you think that expresses or fails to express a cultural subtext to your choices.
**Do all this on computer, freely put down anything, don't worry about organizing your thoughts yet. Let your mind wander and write down what you think. Then, after you've got a good many lines and ideas down start to cut and paste your loose thoughts into organized statements. **
Fill in any missing grammer and you come out with a finished essay

Hmm. I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, but here goes. (It's less than 100 words, but it might help you get started.)
Thirty years ago, my favorite books were about teenaged angst. My cultural identity was largely that of the teenage subculture, surrounded by my peers who were as conflicted as I was about everything from boys to spirituality.
Now one of my favorite genres is horror, which symbolically validates my fears and insecurities. My culture is chaotic and often frightening -- witness the current economic crisis. So part of my %26quot;literary canon%26quot; reflects the terror of everyday life.
Of course, your teacher might be looking for %26quot;cultural identity%26quot; as race (%26quot;Bud, Not Buddy%26quot;), history (%26quot;The Devil's Arithmetic%26quot;), gender (%26quot;How to Make an American Quilt%26quot;), or a host of other categories. See wikipedia (cited below) for a good description of cultural identity.
Good luck!
