How can you legally change your last name if you hate it?

I've never been able to identify with the last name I had. I always loved latin culture and wanted a beautiful Spanish sounding last name (I'm mixed British and Spanish) and hated having an All-American last name.

When I was a kid, I just reminded myself that one day I'd marry, take my husband's last name, and then have a beautiful Spanish last name of my own.

I'm 29, and I never got married. I did some research about name change but according to everything I read, you have to get a judge's approval for a name change, and have to have a good reason. Shouldn't you be free to change your name for any reason?

How can I legally change my last name if I hate it, and it's an ugly name? I don't want to be called Jones for the rest of my life. Please don't tell me that %26quot;its not so bad%26quot; or just to accept it. It's just not ME and I feel like I have no sense of identity.

How can I get rid of my ugly last name legally?

(No offense if that'syour last name).

Is there a way to legally change your name if you hate it so much that it makes you miserable?

Thanks!

1. Choose your new name carefully.Practice signing with it. Have a few people close to you call you by it, and see how you like it. You can change your first name, middle name, last name, or all of the above. Just make sure your new name doesn't imply %26quot;fraudulent intent%26quot; by:

* avoiding bankruptcy by pretending to be someone else

* violating a trademark

* using numbers or symbols (except Roman numerals)

* using obscene words

2. Contact the appropriate local government office to determine the rules and paperwork you'll need to change your name officially.

3. Get the forms to fill out, which typically include:

* a petition (sometimes called a 'deed poll') for change of name

* an order granting change of name

* a legal backer form

* a notice of petition to the public

* an affidavit of consent (if applicable)

* an affidavit of service of notification to authorities (only if you're an alien, ex-convict or attorney)

4. Get the forms notarized, if your state requires it.

5. Make copies for your own records.

6. Submit your paperwork to the appropriate office.

7. Wait for approval. If your name change is not immediately approved, you may need to go to court and defend your reasons.

8. Put an ad in the newspaper announcing your name change. This gives the public a chance to object to your name change if, say, you owe debt under your current name.

9. Fill out the affidavit and return it to the court clerk.

10. Wait for your Order Granting Change of Name, which will be your new I.D.

11. Take this with you to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Social Security Administration, and the Bureau of Records or Vital Statistics in the state you were born so that you can get a new driver's license, social security card, and birth certificate, respectively. You will have to go to the Social Security office before you go to the DMV. If your SSN doesn't match your new name when you apply for a new driver's license, they won't issue it.

It depends on your jurisdiction. Here I'd go to the Department of Births, Deaths and Marriages and change my name by %26quot;deed poll%26quot;. But the wording might not be the same where you are. In New York where my Dad is, I think it's the Department of Vital Statistics. (! We love that name - here a woman's vital statistics are her chest, waist and hip measurements.) Why not call the local council or whatever and ask?

P.S. Using %26quot;Ms%26quot; not %26quot;Miss%26quot; might help...
wow, i'm sorry but this sounds like some major issues here. you're ashamed of your heritage, your name reminds you you're not married, etc? don't you think it will be harder having the spanish name and then remembering it's not from the husband you dream of?

in the end, do what you want but i'd consult a lawyer on good reasoning. if you go in talking about how it will make you feel married the judge will think you're a bit off!
The department of births deaths and marriages or similar.It's easy and cheap, but never despise your past however bad.You are made of your experiences however bad they are.Change your name but don't change yourself!

Pretty unfair chicks have to totally lose their identity after marriage.

Something wonky in that archaic system.Anyway,

Just be.
Be proud of yourself not discouraged. Nobody says their is a perfect age to get married, and no body said you look like a failure BECAUSE your not married. Many people who get married young often get a divorce. Now that is embarrassing.

Know what I find embarrassing? That you want a new last name because your 29 and not married. Accept who you are, and who you are will be accepted.
Do remember that you can't legally change your name to just anything, there are some limitations:

* Names cannot be changed if you have fraudulent intent. In other words if you are trying to avoid bankruptcy by being somebody new or plan to commit a crime using another name.

* A name change is not allowed if you want to take advantage of a trademarked name. So you can't call yourself Oprah and benefit from her marketing power or start your own talk show with the same name.

* You can't use numbers in your name (for example 911) to confuse people and you can't use symbols in the name either. If you like, you can use Roman numerals after your name to indicate which generation you belong to (how many times members of your family have been called Thomas Figoff for example.

* You may not use racial slurs or naughty words in your name.

* If you are a minor child you can't change your name without a court deciding in your favor.

If you legally change your name in a court proceeding, you have a legal record of your name change but remember that it's not all so easy. If you change a child's last name to yours, it isn't the same as an official adoption and you can't change your name to eradicate past mistakes. If you change your name to match your significant others it isn't the same as being married.

Getting a Court Order to Legally Change Your Name

There are three common reasons for wanting a name change:

1. Desire (you want to).

2. You're getting married

3. You're getting divorced.

Desire

Contact your local lawyer, call the court or find out what the law says in the state statutes about name changes. Depending on which state you live in the court that oversees name changes may differ i.e. civil, probate or superior court. Most often it is done at local level. Start by enquiring at your county court.

Do the paperwork to legally change your name - this usually includes:

* A petition to legally change your name - make sure you don't misspell your new one!

* An order granting change of name.

* A legal backer form.

* A notice of petition to the public (this is an advertisement in a local newspaper).

* An affidavit of consent by parent/wife/husband, if relevant.

* An affidavit of service of notification to authorities (this will be necessary if you are an alien, ex-convict or attorney.
